Countdown for Essel Awards

Bangalore, 20^th December 2006: A selection committee of eminent journalists has shortlisted 15 nominees for the Essel Karnataka's Best Legislator Award. Nominees were received from over 100 legislators and their well-wishers, for the award. The selection committee members were A Jayaram, Resident Editor, The Hindu, Dr. R. Purnima, Editor, Udayavani and Hunaswadi Rajan, Chief Reporter, Samyukta Karnataka.

"The Zee Kannada news team conducted an in depth study of all the nominations prior to placing them before the committee," stated Gautham Machaiah, who is spearheading the awards initiative.

The parameters for selection were development work undertaken by the legislator, clean image and integrity, accessibility to people and performance in legislature. The 15 nominees are a mix of youth and experience with representation given on the basis of region and gender too. A jury of eminent personalities will shortlist five finalists from these 15 nominees.

"The objective of these awards is to recognise the unsung heroes from various fields who have contributed to the development of society. We hope that the celebration of their achievements will enthuse the youth to work towards building a stronger and resurgent India," Chairman Subhash Chandra said.

The other award categories are: Sports (February), Civil Service (March), NGO/ Social Worker (April), Police/ Fire force (May), Legal (June), Minister (July), Young innovator/ entrepreneur (August), Medical service (September), Media (October), Art, Culture and Literature (November), Gram Panchayat/ Zilla Member (December).
